Unique places the whole family can enjoy.

Hi, I'm Oscar. Before fatherhood, my adventures led me off the beaten path, to places humming with a unique kind of quiet story: the vast emptiness of echo-less lake beds, abandoned buildings whispering tales of past lives through forgotten objects, and strange human creations unexpectedly encountered in the heart of dense forests. My camera was my constant companion, pushing me to explore further and capture the memories forged in these unique locations. (Picture: me at IInakadate Village in Japan checking out rice paddy art.)

Becoming a dad, however, brought a new perspective to exploration. The impulsive four-hour drive to nowhere is now a logistical challenge with a toddler; venturing into crumbling buildings with little ones is simply not an option; and the allure of creepy forests has definitely faded!

Yet, my desire to instill a deeper understanding of travel in my daughter remains strong. I want her to know that the essence of discovery lies beyond the postcard-perfect views and well-trodden tourist trails. The overlooked corners of our world hold just as much fascination as the most famous landmarks.

This belief is the foundation of Detour Atlas: a carefully curated collection of less-known destinations that welcome the whole family. Think of it as your guide to enriching your family trips – perhaps a detour to the quirky Yoda Fountain while exploring San Francisco's iconic Presidio, an exciting day trip to a surprising local discovery, or even an unforgettable journey to a place so captivating it demands a plane ticket (for me, that's Japan's "Cat Island," Tashirojima).

You'll soon realize that the posts on Detour Atlas go beyond the typical snapshot travel blog. I believe the true magic of these places lies in their histories and the untold stories woven into their fabric. Consider the Hyde Park Obelisk in Sydney, Australia – a seemingly ornate monument that once served as a public sewer vent! Detour Atlas is dedicated to uncovering these hidden, sometimes bizarre connections between place and time.

I sincerely hope you and your family enjoy discovering the world through Detour Atlas!
